Parents decide to get a kitten for their antisocial cat who hates everyone, and the senior cat makes a complete turnaround: 'Things have... changed.'

Every so often, we will see some cat hater on some social media platform perpetuate the lie that cats are aloof creatures, that cats don't care about their humans, that cats only tolerate us because we give them food. Of course it's a lie. Anyone with any remote knowledge of cats knows that it's a lie. Cats love their humans so much, it's not even a question. 

With that said… some cats really are antisocial. But that doesn't mean that they represent all cats. The same way that some humans don't like other humans, but you wouldn't characterize all of them that way. These cats… it's not that they don't like humans. They generally don't like anyone. Only few get to breach their walls and melt their stone-cold hearts. It takes a lot of work, a lot of persistence, a lot of patience and the ability to face rejection over and over again. And if there is one creature in the world that has an abundance of all of this, it is, of course, kittens.

  • A month. A month is not a short amount of time. And we wonder if anyone in this cat's surrounding really tried quite as persistently as this little kitten has. Maybe the friendliness was there all along, and this kitty was simply waiting for the right creature to show it to.

    Godfiend I want to get a 2nd cat but my 12 year old kitty has been an only cat for 9 years now. How was the initial introduction for your cats? How long until they got along like this?

    SpecialKGaming666 OP Spicy! Binx came to us at 8 weeks and it took Hex (3) about 2-3 weeks to get out of "this is my house" dominance mode, and another two weeks of "ok, this is playful not fighting" before they really settled in. The kitten is a LUNATIC though- everything including us, Hex and our two dogs is ambush material!

    Saint_of_Grey If I may ask, how anti-social were they? I could get my grumpy cat a kitten, but I'm fairly sure it's only a 50/50 chance she'll take to it... And she can be a very mean bully.

    SpecialKGaming666 OP He would regularly attack visitors, paid no attention to our two dogs and was perfectly happy to be left completely alone. Now he'll play with toys, hasn't attacked (yet) and will let us pet him regularly!

    notmappedout yep, we were worried about how my old man would take to a kitten last year. he's sensitive and anxious and likes to be by himself in the evenings. he was the one to immediately accept the baby and start teaching him how to tussle. instant besties. even now that the kitten is bigger than him, he's still SO gentle when they wrestle around.

    justthenormalnoise Same thing here. Have a house full of golden girls (15-16 y/o) and decided to keep the last of a feral litter I was fostering. Despite the cautionary tales of seniors and kittens not getting along, my crew has worked it out and they all get along just fine.

    Callmepanda83744 I was so worried when I brought my new kitten home cause I had a pair of bonded senior sisters that had never shown an interest in any other cats. But I fell in love with the new baby at the shelter and couldn't leave him. So I brought him home and did all the slow careful introduction stuff.     Shoaib99Nawaz When we brought home our tiny ball of chaos, we hoped our older cat would find a little joy again - maybe even a friend. But instead, the house felt divided. Our senior girl, once quiet and content, suddenly started retreating to corners she never used before. It broke my heart watching her eyes narrow every time the kitten tried to play.
